Overview
An Assistant Costumer is a key member of the Costume and Wardrobe Department on a film set, responsible for supporting the Costume Designer and Costumer in the management and maintenance of costumes. This position plays an essential role in ensuring that all costume elements align with the creative vision of the film and are ready for actors to wear during production.
Role & Responsibilities
The role of an Assistant Costumer encompasses a variety of tasks which include, but are not limited to, organizing and preparing costumes before shoots, performing alterations and repairs, assisting actors with dressing, and ensuring continuity in the costume's appearance throughout filming. They also handle the cleaning and storage of costumes post-shoot, manage inventory, and may assist with sourcing materials and garments.
Skills Required
The required skills for an Assistant Costumer include a keen eye for detail, strong sewing and tailoring abilities, and knowledge of costume history and fabric types. Good organizational and interpersonal skills are critical, as the job demands working closely with a diverse team and managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Furthermore, time management and problem-solving skills are essential, as the fast-paced nature of film production can present many unexpected challenges.
Education
While a college degree isn't mandatory to become an Assistant Costumer, it can be advantageous.
