What is a Video Flyer?

The role of a Video Flyer is to operate a camera while suspended in the air, capturing dynamic footage from unique and thrilling perspectives. They work closely with the Stunts Department to ensure safety protocols are followed during aerial shots. Video Flyers are often required to perform stunts themselves, such as skydiving, paragliding, or being suspended from a harness, all while operating the camera to get the desired shots.

A Video Flyer must possess excellent physical fitness and stamina, as the job often involves performing stunts and being suspended in the air for extended periods. They should have a strong understanding of camera equipment and be proficient in operating cameras under challenging conditions. Knowledge of different types of aerial vehicles, such as helicopters, drones, or fixed-wing aircraft, is beneficial. Additionally, good communication skills and the ability to work well within a team are essential for coordinating shots and ensuring safety during aerial maneuvers.

While a college degree is not mandatory for a Video Flyer position, it is advantageous to have a background in filmmaking, cinematography, or photography. This education can provide a solid foundation in composition, framing, lighting, and technical aspects of operating a camera. Alternatively, relevant work experience and a demonstrated mastery of aerial cinematography can also qualify individuals for this role.
