What Films Were Shot in Australia?
Australia has attracted major film and television productions with its 30-40% federal + state top-ups refundable tax offset. Notable productions filmed in Australia include Fifty Shades of Grey, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Deadpool 2, War for the Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, and 2 more.
How Does Australia's Film Tax Incentive Work?
Australia offers three federal tax offsets for film and television production, each targeting different production types. These offsets stack with state government incentives in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, creating combined effective rates that can approach 45% on qualifying expenditure.
The offsets are administered by Screen Australia and claimed through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
Federal Offset Programs
Producer Offset
The Producer Offset provides a 40% refundable tax offset for qualifying Australian feature films intended for theatrical release, and 30% for all other eligible formats including television series, documentaries, and short films. Productions must have significant Australian content (SAC) as determined by Screen Australia.
Location Offset
The Location Offset provides a 30% refundable tax offset for large-budget international productions that shoot in Australia. The minimum qualifying Australian production expenditure (QAPE) is AUD 20 million for features and AUD 1.5 million per hour for television series. This is the primary incentive for Hollywood studios filming in Australia.
PDV (Post, Digital and Visual Effects) Offset
The PDV Offset provides a 30% refundable tax offset on post-production, digital, and visual effects work performed in Australia, regardless of where the production was shot. Minimum QAPE is AUD 500,000. This offset makes Australia competitive for post-production work even when principal photography occurs elsewhere.
State Government Top-Ups
Australian states offer additional incentives that stack with the federal offsets:
- Queensland: Up to 15% additional through Screen Queensland
- New South Wales: Up to 10% additional through Screen NSW
- Victoria: Up to 10% additional through Film Victoria
- South Australia: Up to 10% additional through the South Australian Film Corporation
Why Productions Choose Australia
World-class studios. Fox Studios Australia (Sydney), Village Roadshow Studios (Gold Coast), and Docklands Studios (Melbourne) provide large-scale stage infrastructure.
Diverse landscapes. From tropical rainforest in Queensland to desert outback, coastal beaches, and modern cityscapes, Australia offers extraordinary location diversity.
Skilled crew base. Australian crews are experienced in handling major studio productions, with strong departments in camera, grips, electrics, art, and VFX.
Time zone advantage. For productions serving Asian markets, Australia's time zone aligns well with major Asian distribution territories.
How Do You Manage Australia Production Costs?
Tracking qualifying Australian production expenditure (QAPE) requires separating Australian spend from non-Australian spend throughout the production. Production budgeting software that supports AUD/USD multi-currency tracking and categorizes costs by territory simplifies the offset claim process.
